Arizona Science Standards Revisions Raises Concerns

FLAGSTAFF (May 25, 2018)

In September 2016 the Arizona Department of Education began a review of the Arizona Science Standards for K-12 education. The education standards along with proposed revisions were made public in late March 2018 and have generated a strong reaction by many educational subject-matter experts.

Three changes in particular are primary sources of the greatest concern:

The “scientific method” is replaced with “science and engineering practices”
The theory of evolution gets a new definition and is framed in a context of “belief”
“The Big Bang” is removed entirely from the Earth and Space Sciences section

LAUNCH Flagstaff Releases Initial Baseline Education Report

FLAGSTAFF (February 21, 2018)

LAUNCH Flagstaff has released a Baseline Education Report, with some initial strategies for improving educational outcomes for every child. A partnership of community stakeholders, LAUNCH Flagstaff has a set of shared goals which encompass kindergarten readiness, third grade reading proficiency, eighth grade math proficiency, high school graduation and enrollment in post-secondary education and training. The partnership’s newly reported data spotlight specific areas for increased focus, based on the premise that student success leads to a community’s health and vitality. LAUNCH Represented at Arizona Town Hall

MESA (November 15, 2017)

Flagstaff attorney Patrice Horstman and Coconino County Superintendent of Schools Risha VanderWey, both members of the LAUNCH Flagstaff Community Leadership Council, joined LAUNCH Partnership Director Paul Kulpinski at the 110th Arizona Town Hall on Funding preK – 12 Education. This northern Arizona contingent participated with about one-hundred other community and business leaders, elected officials, students and educators in an intense three-day process to draft a list of recommendations to be used by communities across the state to influence local and state policy on funding public education in Arizona. On October 17th the LAUNCH Flagstaff Kindergarten Readiness Community Action Network (CAN) met with the Arizona Department of Education (ADE) to learn more about their Kindergarten Developmental Inventory (KDI) as part of our research into finding the most appropriate tool for Flagstaff educators to measure developmentally appropriate skills necessary for success in Kindergarten. Flagstaff’s Recommendations for preK-12 Education

FLAGSTAFF (October 1, 2017)

Nearly one hundred Flagstaff community members engaged in thoughtful discussion about funding preK – 12 education in Arizona for four hours on October 1, 2017 at the Coconino Community College Lone Tree Campus. Students, educators, parents, government officials, business leaders, and other concerned citizens crafted a five-page report with their recommendations for improving the funding of our educational system. Future Leaders Make Recommendations About Their Education

Twenty-One student leaders from all seven Flagstaff area high schools met on September 26, 2017 to discuss their ideas for what a world-class education system could look like. They drafted a three page report with their recommendations around goals and and actions for community leaders, policy makers and citizens to take for creating this educational system. The first LAUNCH Flagstaff Community Leadership Council convened on September 13, 2017. Leaders learned a little more about each other and what might be possible when we are successful in creating a world-class educational experience for every child in Flagstaff, from cradle through career. The image above shows the word cloud that the Leadership Council created with that question.
