Flagstaff EAA Chapter Seeks Young Pilots

Flagstaff, AZ. January 8, 2020

The Flagstaff Chapter of the Experimental Aviation Association (EAA) is seeking candidates to send to the Advanced Air Academy in July 2020. The Academy, held each summer in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, consists of a week of exposure to aeronautical sciences, flight training, aircraft construction, maintenance and restoration among many aviation topics.

Financial Literacy Class at Summit High

Financial Literacy Class at Summit High School

Flagstaff, AZ. December 20, 2019

During the fall semester this year, one class of Summit High School students took part in a financial literacy curriculum pilot program intended to teach students about personal finance.

The pilot class was developed through the collaborative efforts of the LAUNCH Flagstaff Financial Literacy Team.

Law Enforcement Career Day

Flagstaff, AZ. November 15, 2019

About forty students from Flagstaff, Coconino, and Summit High Schools attended a day-long career exploration day in the law-enforcement sector on November 12 and 14, 2019. The junior and senior class students had opportunities to tour the law enforcement facility which jointly houses the Coconino County Sheriff’s Department and the Flagstaff Police Department.

During the day, students had opportunities to tour the dispatch center, see demonstrations of emergency response vehicles and equipment, and also learn about the science of gathering crime-scene evidence. Read more “Law Enforcement Career Day” →

Internship Coordination Strengthens with Addition of New Positions

FLAGSTAFF June 26, 2019

The community efforts of the Flagstaff Internship Network will be strengthened this fall with the addition of two staff positions at Coconino Community College and Flagstaff Unified School District.

Coconino Community College (CCC) hired a new Internship Coordinator who began work this week. The coordinator will help the college strengthen opportunities for CCC students to gain real life experience in work-based learning opportunities with local businesses. Financial Literacy Team Formed

One of the greatest obstacles that hinder the transition from high school to post secondary training and education is a lack of financial literacy amongst students and their parents. There is a lack of quality financial literacy programs and awareness of the few programs that do exist is scant.

This was one of the conclusions realized by members of the LAUNCH Flagstaff Post Secondary CAN in their effort to increase the number of high school students completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) during last school year. Read more “Financial Literacy Team Formed” →

Dual Enrollment Opportunities Expand

FLAGSTAFF (August 6, 2018)

One of the most cost effective ways to earn college credit, is to earn that credit while still in high school. In Flagstaff, this is accomplished through a special agreement between Coconino Community College (CCC) and a student’s high school. Until now, only students in the Flagstaff Unified School District (FUSD) could take advantage of this opportunity called dual enrollment, but as of the start of this new school year that has changed.

Flagstaff Arts and Leadership Academy (FALA) and Northland Preparatory Academy (NPA) are the first charter high schools in Flagstaff to enter into their own agreement with CCC to offer dual enrollment in some specific courses they offer. Read more “Dual Enrollment Opportunities Expand” →

LAUNCH Flagstaff has released a Baseline Education Report, with some initial strategies for improving educational outcomes for every child. A partnership of community stakeholders, LAUNCH Flagstaff has a set of shared goals which encompass kindergarten readiness, third grade reading proficiency, eighth grade math proficiency, high school graduation and enrollment in post-secondary education and training. The partnership’s newly reported data spotlight specific areas for increased focus, based on the premise that student success leads to a community’s health and vitality. LAUNCH Partners Host Financial Aid and Scholarship Fair

FLAGSTAFF (January 21, 2018)

Nearly 150 students and parents braved the snow on the morning of Saturday, January 20th to learn about scholarship opportunities and strategies for receiving other financial aid to help pay for post-secondary education and training. Over 13 organizations were on hand to share tips and information.

“Parents and students want up-to-date information about financial resources but often have difficulty knowing where to start,” said Megan Anderson of the Northern Arizona College Resource Center and coordinator of Saturday’s event. Flagstaff FAFSA Completion Rises

FLAGSTAFF (November 18, 2017)

Flagstaff area high schools saw a combined 21 percent increase in completed applications for the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) this year over last. According to data from the Federal Student Aid office, by November 17, 2017 the seven public high schools in Flagstaff submitted 651 FAFSA applications compared to 549 by the same date in 2016, a 19% increase. 607 of those 2017 applications were completed by the November date compared to only 549 in 2016.
